My Autobiography

My name is Robert Lewis and I have 2 daughters. The first daughter from my previous marriage is 12 years of age. My second daughter was born April 28, 2008 at Frye.

Where am I from?

I was born in Pittsburgh, PA and lived in that area until around age 10 when I moved down to Charlotte with my parents who soon divorced. During my childhood in NC I spent more time switching schools than actually going to them. My father worked as a Contract Nuclear Engineer for Duke Power so he would take on assignments at various plants in NC causing us to move our locations often. During my high school years, I went to at least 5 different schools, until I finally moved out and joined the Navy.

Video: Guam sinking

The Navy is time period that was probably the hardest for me but, also the best for straightening a child like me out. I was assigned to the USS Guam (LPH-9) from 1992-1996 and spent most of that time afloat in the Mediterranean Sea with a few shore visits. Some of the places we would pull into for a day or two were: Israel, Italy, Greece, France, England, Turkey, and Kenya. Although we had little time ashore I was able to learn a lot and appreciate the cultures of other countries. I look forward to some day being able to go back to Pompeii and other places again.

I went to school for Information Systems and Programming at CVCC in 2000 graduating from CVCC in 2002. I immediately went looking for work but, I was learning that the degrees CVCC gave us had little to do with getting a job. During this period of time, I started substitute teaching while applying for computer jobs. To my surprise, I really enjoyed the kids and the teaching. This was a big change since the job I was looking for promised to pay large sums of money while teaching promised to pay a little something. What made me definitely decide to get into teaching was that I liked it. It was a job that I really enjoyed versus computers which was more of way to make money. My girlfriend at the time which I met at CVCC and later married supported me and encouraged me to work towards the teaching instead of the computers.

Why did I choose middle school? Middle school is where I started having difficulty during my childhood. I want to be able to not just pass that kid on but really help and encourage the children that are barely hanging on. I want to help where I was not helped as a child. These kids deserve someone to help motivate them to want to learn. This is why I chose middle school.

My content area is a matter of choice based on areas of education that I find interesting. Science and Social Studies are my two content areas. My daughter who is in middle school is very strong in both of these subjects. This might be coincidence or she might just be interested the things Daddy is interested in.

My full biography could go in a lot deeper with all the wonderful drama of life but I am going to cut it off here and let you respond to my biography.

  3. Robert,

Congratulations on the new baby. Dude…your life will never be the same, and you wouldn’t want it any other way.

I love the blog. Thanks for getting into it.

Computer skills will really come in handy in teaching. Your life experiences will enable you to bring social studies alive for your students.

Best of luck to you. Again, thanks for the creativity.

    Robert,

There are a lot of things that you put in your autobiography that many of us never would have known otherwise. You have done a lot of amazing things and have packed a lot of life into a short amount of time. I commend you for all of your hard work to get where you are. You will go far in life. Your baby is beautiful- I hope you enjoy every minute of it.
