Give a thorough description of the strategy and how it will be implemented.
This strategy involves writing and is used as a pre-reading exercise. The ABC Brainstorming starts by having the students write the alphabet leaving space beside each individual letter for a word or phrase. These words or phrases must be directly associated with the topic that I will give them. The topic “ISLAM” is then given to the students so they can work on filling in those spots along the alphabet. When the teacher feels that enough time has been given to these students, they will be instructed to get with a partner to fill in blank spots and to think of other terms for the spots not filled out. When this is finished the students will take turns naming the words they have come up with helping to establish the student’s prior knowledge about the subject.
Explain what part of the standard course of study is addressed by this activity.
Competency Goal 4 The learner will identify significant patterns in the movement of people, goods, and ideas over time and place in Africa, Asia, and Australia.
Objectives
4.01 Describe the patterns of and motives for migrations of people, and evaluate the impact on the political, economic, and social development of selected societies and regions.
4.02 Identify the main commodities of trade over time in selected areas of Africa, Asia, and Australia and evaluate their significance for the economic, political, and social development of cultures and regions.
4.03 Examine key ethical ideas and values deriving from religious, artistic, political, economic, and educational traditions, as well as their diffusion over time, and assess their influence on the development of selected societies and regions in Africa, Asia, and Australia.
Explain why you think this strategy will work and how this strategy help your students learn?
I think this strategy will work well with students due to its ability to get students to start thinking about key parts of the text. When the student starts reading about Islam and comes across words like Jihad they will recognize it as something they have heard previously. Also, when other students hear some of the terms before reading it may start to peak their interest causing them to look deeper into the subject.

Sounds like a great idea. How would you handle any controversial things said on the topic of Islam by students?
Tiffany
How would you handle controversial things about Christianity?
Robert…I like ABC Brainstorming also.
I think any controversial comments regarding Islam would open a valuable door for discussion and learning.
…Chris.
I think it would be a strategy for science , a way for students to share their knowledge.

Robert,
I like this approach. I can see this in my 6th and 7th grade careers classes. I can see using it with a projector where I wrote the alphabet in excel and then filled it in with the help of the class. Perhaps it could be competitive, girls vs. boys. My kids love that.
Frank Lilly
Robert,
I also used ABC Brain Storming as one of my strategies. I think this is a simple way to get students thinking about a particular topic. I do agree with Frank that making it a competitive activity will be something that the students enjoy.
Heather Connolly
Response to your question above: When teaching, I would not teach about Christianity directly. I would tell how Christianity influenced the culture, customs, political decisions, etc. that came in contact with it.
However Robert, as teachers we have to be practical. You are going to teach history in the Bible Belt of the USA. There are many parents who will not approve of their children being taught about Islam, even in the context of history. I do not condone these parents beliefs, but we will have to deal with them. How will you deal with them? When you start teaching about Muhammad, the Spice Road, and how Islam spread, then other parents will argue why can we not talk about Jesus, his death, and how Christianity spread.

12.01 Examine the major belief systems in selected regions of Africa, Asia, and Australia, and analyze their impact on cultural values, practices, and institutions.
You still are not answering my question. How would you deal with the parents that disapprove of the subject matter discussed above. Quoting the NCSCOS does not answer my question.
Tiffany
Great discussion between robert and tiffany !!! I do like the ABC technique, don’t know if I would like the touchy subject choice!!!
